A festive Easter weekend

If receiving many Easter eggs from loved ones and staff wasn’t enough, over the course of our Easter weekend residents sat down to some wonderful meals! On Good Friday battered cod and vegetables was served with a delicious pudding and custard. Easter Sunday was pork and our popular apple crumble, and to top it all off on Bank Holiday Monday residents received a hearty roast with a classic chocolate sponge dessert.
All the meals at Stanfield Nursing Home are prepared from scratch by a professional chef and his team, using good quality, fresh, local ingredients. The meat comes from our local butcher and fruit and vegetables come from the farm shop at the end of our lane.
As well as our traditional menus, we offer a wide range of extras so all our residents are well catered for as it is important to us that people are given the food they want and are able to eat.

Regular visitors provided fabulous entertainment

Activities at Stanfield require a sensitivity to our residents’ capabilities and needs whilst keeping them as active and stimulated as possible. Every month our residents receive weekly visits from certain entertainers. Having the same people come in regularly is an important thing to consider for specialist dementia care – a service provided here at Stanfield Nursing Home. Those suffering with dementia will find it most beneficial to live in an environment in which people, objects, and routine are familiar to them.

Here is a guide to our fantastic entertainers:
Ray – an excellent singer, performing relaxing songs from folk and traditional Irish ballads through to popular classics from the 60’s and 70’s.
Terry – A singer who also plays old songs from times gone by on his ukulele. These are great songs for residents and their relatives to come, reminisce and sing along.
Les – A singer who plays guitar and harmonica, specialising in music from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.
Corrinne – Entertaining everyone with traditional tunes to popular melodies on the Cello, requests are always welcome.
Kim – A singer and guitarist of the music hall who encourages participation with musical aerobics.
Reaction Music – A variety of African music where residents are welcome to join in with percussion instruments and song.

Music therapy as a leading strategy for dementia care

Music is an important activity at Stanfield due to having such a profound effect on dementia patients, as well as raising overall spirits for everyone. Musical memory is considered partly independent from other memory systems in the brain – a surprisingly robust area for those with Alzheimer’s disease. This preservation creates an opportunity for improved engagement of people with dementia, allowing them to reminisce in ways that would otherwise be unavailable to them. It therefore provides an overall better quality of life by helping to reduce agitation, isolation, depression and anxiety, see current research here for more information.
