Remembrance Sunday
Remembrance Sunday is a very important day for many of our residents who would have had relatives that participated in the war. We made sure to engage as many as possible in the multiple activities spread throughout the week. We began our nursing home calendar with an arts and crafts session of poppy making early in the month and for those who missed out, or simply wanted more, we organised another session a few days later. They all turned out beautiful with many wearing their own creations. On Saturday, residents sat down to watch the Festival of Remembrance service live on BBC1 and the following day we all watched the Remembrance Service live from the Cenotaph. Resident’s families and friends were all invited to join for the day.
Gearing up for Christmas
As the Christmas joy approached, our nursing home organised a crafts day of Christmas decorations with Beth! This is a wonderful way to engage residents in the joy of Christmas and lift spirits. A few days later residents got creative when crafting wool into pom pom robins! They turned out beautifully paired well with all our great decorations displayed around the home – it really did start to feel like Christmas. Our Worcestershire care home has an ethos of person-centred care. We endeavour to provide individual care based on the wants and needs of our residents. So, to finish the build up to December, we gathered residents around to discuss their ideas for the countdown to Christmas.
Making and crafting is a good source of expression and creativity for our residents which is why it is such a recurring activity in our daily calendars. In previous years, the Stanfield Team have focused on a theme of ‘making and not buying’. This was a slower paced and considered approach to creating the joy of Christmas rather than simply buying. It was very well received among our nursing home calendar, bringing the magic to life.
Other activities
Alongside our poppy-based crafting and Christmas preparations we organised our regular nursing home calendar. As our knitting group was so popular last month, residents were able to join the circle twice again this month. It was a great opportunity for residents to knit accessories to keep warm this winter! Other activities included: the gardening club planting bulbs for spring, ball and balloon games, relaxing yoga style exercise, whiteboard games and many musical visitors!
